Applying gel nail polish takes longer than applying regular nail polish. This is because you need more equipment, as gel nail polish must be cured under a special LED/UV lamp. You also need a special base coat and top coat, which help the polish stay on better. Gel nail polish can stay on your nails for up to 3 weeks, but this depends on the condition of your nails, the gel nail polish, and how it is applied. Because the gel stays on for so long, it is also more difficult to remove. Fortunately, special gel nail polish removers are available that make it easier to remove gel nail polish. A gel nail polish remover is actually a nail polish remover with acetone. Acetone is not very good for your skin and nails, but it will remove your gel nail polish effectively. Acetone turns the gel nail polish back into a liquid, making it easier to remove.
How do you remove gel nail polish?
It is best to have gel nail polish removed at a nail salon. If you do not have time or prefer to do it yourself at home, you can follow these steps:
Step 1. File down the top layer of the gel nail polish with a nail file so that the acetone can penetrate the gel nail polish more effectively.
Step 2. Soak cotton pads with acetone or nail polish remover with acetone. Wrap them around your nails using aluminum foil.
Step 3. Leave them on for about 15–20 minutes, then remove the cotton pads.
Step 4. Remove the remaining gel nail polish by rubbing the cotton pad back and forth over the nail.
Step 5. Carefully remove any stubborn nail polish residue from the nail.
