Thomas Lyle Williams a commencé par produire un mascara, vendu sous le nom « Lash-Brow-Ine » et composé d'un mélange de poussière de charbon et de vaseline. Il avait encore ajusté le mélange à l'aide d'une simple boîte de chimie et le vendait en hommage à sa sœur. Plus tard, le nom a été changé en « Maybelline ». En 1917, le tout premier vrai mascara tel que nous le connaissons aujourd'hui a été produit. Bien sûr, la formule était totalement différente à l'époque, mais heureusement, elle a été améliorée au fil des années.
